OUTREACH GRANTS – Fall 2021


In 2021, Christ Church distributed more than $64,000 in outreach grants to local partners serving our community and other not-for-profits working around the globe.

 

DIOCESE AND LOCAL


The Apostle’s House Food Pantry, Newark, NJ


This grant will be used to support TAH food pantry which serves over 1,200 families experiencing food insecurity in Newark and Essex County. These funds will be used for the 2022 program to buy a variety of meats, cheese, butter and eggs.


Episcopal Preaching Foundation, Springfield, NJ


This grant will be used by EPF to underwrite Episcopal seminarians and future preachers to attend the May 2021 Preaching Excellence Program (PEP) conference scheduled for May 31st - June 4th at the Roselyn Retreat Center in Richmond, VA. The hope is that the conference can be held in person in 2022 as it was on Zoom in 2021 for the first time ever and in person is preferred.


Family Assistance Resource Center (FARC), Orange, NJ


This grant will be used to help fund the cost of providing emergency and recovery assistance to low-income families who have been the victims of a fire or a natural disaster, as well as to families being challenged by COVID-19, in the greater Newark metro area. Families are provided with access to food, clothing, footwear, bed and bath linens, personal care products and other home care items.


Family Promise, Summit, NJ


This grant will be used to support the Union County Program. The funds will support temporary emergency shelter apartments for Union County families experiencing homelessness and expanded prevention and stabilization programming to help families remain housed and avoid eviction.


All the Way Up, Newark, NJ


This grant will support All The Way Up’s program to provide additional adult higher education opportunities in Newark. These funds will support its GED and ABE (Adult Basic Education) classes and tutoring programs for its growing student population. Engagement with students moved to an online platform during the pandemic. For Fall 2021, All the Way Up plans to offer both in-person tutoring as well as online-only classes.


Good Success Academies, Montclair, NJ


This grant will be used to support the cost of the Life Academy academic year program offered to high school age youth residing in Newark and parts of Essex County. The program’s purpose is to provide students with weekly programs in language arts, math enrichment, college preparedness and career exploration in teenagers ages 14 – 19. The program combines classroom academics at Montclair State University with supervised work experience.


North Porch Women and Infant Centers, Newark, NJ


This grant will be used to cover the costs of operating expenses including salaries, rent, insurance and supplies. The Program has been serving thousands of children per year for the last 10 years. They have experienced a dramatic increase in the number of women and children served to 4,100 due to the Covid – 19 pandemic of which 3,700 were children. Additionally, costs of infant supplies has skyrocketed due to the supply chain disruptions caused by the pandemic.


Triangle Park Community Center Food Pantry, Jersey City, NJ


This grant will be used to support a food pantry in the Greenville section, Triangle Park in Jersey City, NJ. Funds will allow the food pantry to purchase protein and fresh produce, purchase non- food items such as toiletries and senior incontinence products, and support operational costs related to transportation and distribution of food and supplies. The Covid-19 pandemic has caused a surge in food and supply demands as well as costs. They have increased their number of persons served from 400 a month pre-pandemic to nearly 1,500 a month.


The Warehouse, Millburn, NJ


The Warehouse supports individuals and families who are moving out of homelessness and starting a new beginning into their own space with nothing but a trash bag of clothes. The goal is to provide clients with furniture, household items and de?cor to help make their new space a home. Their clients are referred from Bridges Outreach, Homeless Solutions, International Rescue Committee, City of Newark- Office of Homeless Services, Family Promise, Sierra House, Isaiah House, Covenant House, Turning Point, and Essex County and NJ based social services. The grant will be used for warehouse storage and transportation costs. They have moved in 4-5 families a week on average and the goal is to help another 35 by year end. They project to assist more than 380 moves in 2022 averaging 7 a week.

 



INTERNATIONAL 


The Order of the Holy Cross and Love Must Act, Inc, Eastern Cape, South Africa


The Holy Cross School of Sustainability Project is 6 year project designed to support the Holy Cross School, an Anglican School established in Grahamstown, South Africa by the Order of the Holy Cross, Holy Cross Monastery in conjunction with Love Must Act, Inc. a not for profit founded by the Bishop of Lexington and COO of the Episcopal Church. The Holy Cross school model is a wholistic approach to provide bi-lingual learning to youth in K-6th grades and humanitarian aid to their families so that they can continue to send their children to school.


This grant will be used to help fund the school operations and humanitarian needs of the students and their families in 2022. The Holy Cross School has remained open throughout the pandemic.


Kiwimbi International, Amagoro, Kenya


This grant will be used to support a lunch program called “Food for Thought” for school age children in Amagoro, Kenya. This organization was introduced to CCSH by Joan McKweon. The grant funds will be used to purchase food and pay domestic workers who prepare and serve the food. The annual lunch cost per student is approximately $150. They currently cater to 200 students a year.




GRANT APPLICATION


The Outreach Grants Committee seeks grant applications from a broad spectrum of local, national and global organizations. The Committee meets four times a year to review grant applications, research funding needs, and determine how to allocate annual funding to worthy recipients. Christ Church in Short Hills encourages grant applicants and recipients to explore alternative opportunities to advance the interests and funding of their respective ministries.

Grants range from $500 to $5,000 based on the size and scope of the proposed program. Please refer to our list of grant recipients to see the types of programs we have previously funded.
