On March 28, 1882, a group of
Short Hills residents met to form Christ Church. Early services were held in the
Music Hall, the community building constructed by Stewart Hartshorn. The first
services in the church building were held on Trinity Sunday, June 8, 1884.
Although consecrated as a member
of the Diocese of Newark, in the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United
States of America, the founders envisioned Christ Church as a community church
serving all Christian denominations. This is embodied in the message inscribed
above the baptistery window, “Ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” We are happy to
welcome people from all traditions.
Christ Church is a leading parish
in the Episcopal Diocese of Newark not only in size but also in financial
support and in lay and clergy participation in diocesan and national Episcopal
Church matters.
There are many opportunities for
fellowship, for nurturing spiritual lives and enriching faith, and for providing
service within and beyond the church community. The clergy is readily available
to offer spiritual counsel and pastoral care.
